If you’re not up-to-date on the Hawaiian murder trial of accused State Department Diplomatic Security Agent Chris Deedy, here is the 411.

New video of the shooting is now online. Watch the whole thing, but things do get interesting around 4:30 in. Let’s have a look:

Hawaii News Now – KGMB and KHNL

Here’s the link if you can’t see the embedded video above.

    Some observations:

    — I do not know who is speaking on the video. Maybe a cop and the judge?

    — This video, in comparison to previous releases, shows the interaction preceding the shooting more clearly.

    — “Diamond Head side” and “Ewa Side” are Hawaiian terms roughly denoting East and West.

    — At around 4:30 as Deedy gets up he appears to either scratch his back or touch his weapon.

    — At around 16:00 Deedy may leave the scene; some witnesses and one of the 911 calls support this.

    — It appears several people several times try to back Deedy off, which he appears to resist.

    — Look for the guy in the lower right corner of the screen to cover his ears; this may be the moment of the shots.

–Anybody know who Jessica West in the video is? She does not appear to be Deedy’s spouse based on other photos.

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty like they on TV so we wait now for the Hawaiian court to issue a verdict.

Expect Deedy’s defense lawyer to borrow goofy San Diego mayor’s laughable excuse —

      http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/08/01/207828925/beset-san-diego-mayor-says-he-didnt-get-harassment-training

To wit, Dirty Deedy was never NOT by DS NOT to carry a loaded gun while loaded. Is this level of “professionalism” in DS the tip of the iceberg that will sink the sinking ship of State?

DS agent James Combs should be called as a “character” witness;, he could use the San Diego defense too.

Actually the San Diego defense not inherently ridiculous, considering that “sexual harassment” is a politically charged, mutable and very debatable concept – unlike fucking shooting a man to death.

Speaking of horrendous misdeeds. . .

Is it any wonder that no one, and I mean no one, from either the left or right side of the spectrum, has any respect for our lap dog press? As Exhibit A, I give you a recent article (yesterday) from Slate magazine that states that the USG’s New York Passport Office is a model of efficiency to be emulated by all organizations.

Perhaps State Department paid the authors a bribe to publish this piece of puffery. One would hope. Otherwise, one would have to conclude that the research and critical thinking skills of the authors are non-existent. A tiny bit of research would show that the real reason the passport office is efficient is that after the Great Passport Debacle of 2007, when millions of people couldn’t get passports in a reasonable time, the USG threw trememdous monetary and personnel resoources at the passport office. Immediately afterwards, with the great recession, demand for passports tanked, thereby now giving the impression the Passport Office operates with efficiency.

I don’t have the time nor desire to link to the offending piece of shit, as I have to hurry to work. But this is classic in why we don’t trust our lapdog press.

Did the article also mention the GAO investigation that documented passport agencies performed poorly in detecting passport fraud?

Bauer: no the article(I’ve posted the link below) deosn’t mention any of that. But I’ll be sure and remind people.

Here’s something really funny. Do a search on Slate and you get the second link I’ve included on how incompetent the passport office was in 2007. They should have did some research on the site.

And now a riddle for PVB: what is the name of the consular officer almost arrested by the FBI, circa 2005, for having sex on a plane (a little of that boy on boy action) who will soon be assuming duties as one of CA’s congressional liaison officers? Bonus points for the name of the Assistant Secreatary who saved his ass!

Here’s a link to get you started.

The other point to make is that a US passport costs $165, quite a price for a booklet made of paper. Probably not hard to make money off a deal like that.

The UK does it for about US$110.

The article also fails to mention the ongoing labor problems the Passport Office has with its unionized workers.

I have gratefully forgotten the little guy’s name, but I believe he worked in CA/PA if we’re talking about the same person (are there more than one????)

My understanding is also that he was flying home from a work assignment on government orders and on a government ticket, so any excuse that this was private time is a tiny bit weak. Miami rocks!

Not sure Diplomatic Security took any action vis-a-vis his security clearance.

His savior was of course A/S Harty!

I’m not fan many of the tough guy types, but isn’t it a bit hypocritical to judge this guy guilty before the trial is over? People post here that they’ve gotten raw deals dealing with State and DS, but then turn around and are ‘positive’ this guy is guilty. That sounds more typical of the MO and mindset at State and DS then that of people who have been harmed by those very institutions and its attack monkeys.
State and DS seem to both have gone on a tear going after any misconduct the past few years while talking about ‘family’ and ‘employees as the most important assets’. How about you release those people you can’t charge with anything from linking keyboards and go after people who really did/do/will do awful things? Surely you’ll find a few agents and fso’s who have been very naughty. Or you can just claim you don’t have enough proof, don’t recall why you didn’t investigate, call it a witch hunt and shut things down, or just turn a blind eye for over a decade. Love it.

I think this is the only non-Hawaiian source for reporting on the Deedy story, and based on page views whenever I run a Deedy piece, people seem interested. It is natural for commenters on any criminal case to have opinions about guilt and innocence, especially when a significant part of the evidence in this case is a video we can see same as the jury. In the end only the jury can decide.

About the DS angle, I think many commenters see guys like Deedy as examples of how DS acts. Many feel DS tends to “shoot first” and ask questions never.

We’ll see what happens in Hawaii.

Elderts and Medeiros were both local punks that were well known for causing trouble. Elderts was arrested in 2008 for disorderly conducted and resisted arrest while swearing at the police who eventually subdued him (sound familiar?). Medeiros was arrested a few months before the trial as well but charges were dropped.

There are two narratives to this story. In one, an agent is abusing his power and uses it to be aggressive against a local. The second narrative is an agent acted in good faith to de-escalate a situation and instead Elderts escalated the situation further requiring the agent to use his weapon, which killed Elderts. Which narrative is right? Or is it neither? Both? You’d need all the information to know for sure and that is the jury’s job now. But as armchair jurors, we see that the known facts fit into either narrative. As many here seem to know already, a law enforcement officer CAN absolutely use his gun against an unarmed person that is physically capable of taking his weapon away. If Deedy was not the aggressor, if Elderts attacked him, and if Deedy was legitimately concerned that he could be fatally hurt and/or have his weapon taken he is completely justified in killing Elderts.

Good points. I think one issue the jury will be sorting out is at what point did one of the two men become an “aggressor.” A lot passed between them before Elderts lunged at Deedy and Deedy fired.

When Deedy showed Elderts his credentials that should’ve been the end of it for any rational person. Unfortunately Elderts was drunk, high on drugs and didn’t care. It’s a pattern of behavior he’s exhibited before…

As for who was the aggressor it was Elderts who got up from the table and got in Deedy’s face (it’s funny how people want to skip over this). Elderts and Deedy started this situation by acting like idiots and then escalated the situation to violence.
