Ghosts of Tom Joad: A Story of the #99PercentMy new book, Ghosts of Tom Joad: A Story of the #99 Percentis now available and shipping from Amazon in Kindle, paperback and hardcover.

The book is off to a good start. Here what one reviewer said:

Ghosts of Tom Joad is a book about the 99% but told from a very personal level. I needed to remind myself throughout the book that this is fiction, but it is also so many people’s real life story. Van Buren laces factual information throughout the book, but it fits into the story. It does not read like a collection of statistics or a leftist/union propaganda brochure. It reads as real life. This book is very well done on so many levels.

    Here’s another, from Daniel Ellsberg:

In his new book Ghosts of Tom Joad Van Buren turns to the larger themes of social justice and equality, and asks uncomfortable questions about where we are headed. He is no stranger to speaking truth to power, and the critical importance of doing that in a democracy cannot be overestimated.

    Rolling Stone:

A lyrical, and deeply reported look at America’s decline from the bottom up. Though a work of fiction, Ghosts of Tom Joad is – sadly, and importantly – based on absolute fact. Buy it, read it, think about it.

    Academy-Award nominated filmmaker James Spione:

Like his heroes Steinbeck and Agee before him, the author takes us on an unflinching tour of America’s “broken places,” yet true to his predecessors Van Buren never loses sight of his rough characters’ resilient humanity, their deeply held yearning for the grounding connection of family and community, their stubborn hope for a better life. An urgent, important story and an incredibly necessary book.

Ghosts of Tom Joad is an important book for me, and a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me to bring the issues of social and economic inequality in America to a wider audience, to expose clearly our apartheid of dollars in our nation. If you enjoy my writing here, or on TomDispatch, HuffPo, FireDogLake or elsewhere, picking up a copy of the book will help fuel what I hope to continue doing.

Ghosts of Tom Joad: A Story of the #99 Percentis a good story, but with a conscience.

Thanks Rich. Pretend this is PBS and I spent all day threatening you into buying it, and then shove a cheap tote bag into your hands so it’s all better.

Seriously, thanks, and I hope you enjoy the book.

I want to film it in Canada; cuts filming cost by half. But I fear you might not make it back to the land of the free (of rational thought).

Why not in the Midwest? All the abandoned factories are there for free sets, and you can probably hire the original workers as extras cheap. Add in zombies and a nude scene to bring in a larger audience.

      “Why not in the Midwest?”

In the spirit of the book it would appropriate to film it “offshore.” Profits before country.

Excellent point. We’ll hire illegal immigrants for all the roles.

Hire foreign actors. It will do better in the foreign markets. American audiences only go to movies to escape reality.

In that case, you can do what some American companies do and go to the Communist countries, like China.

You can buy citizenship and avoid paying taxes too. In fact, you can hire labor that is FREE or promise wages and then just don’t pay out when production is done.

If anyone back in the US, say some USG regulatory agency suddenly feels incentivized to investigate, you can “encourage” the necessary counterpart agency back in that Communist country, for the right fee, to provide you with a stamped or certified proof no in-country rules were violated. It’s a win-win and the USG regulatory agency can go back to sleep.

Bonus — how many stickers can be collected that read “inspected by #32″?

Then, flush with profits in hand and facilitating great relations with (insert name of Communist country here), you can donate to the Tea Party and propel the movement to dismantle our very own government at home. Nooooooooo conflict of interest there. Bonus: you can probably donate to the Democrats to not take any action. Just do — nothing. Americans for Inertia 2016!!

Here lies a Ghost of Tom Joad who waits for the 1%. May he be merciful. Not.

That’s because it couldn’t fight back.

Earl and the other invisible millions like him should have boarded the bus for DC and set up Hoovervilles to make themselves visible to the country and the world. Hell, make them shoot you. At least the family could sue.

Geez, don’t make it easy for the 1 percent and do it yourself. I’m thinking the 1 percent would enjoy TJ. In their POV it has a happy ending.
