My thanks again to the students and faculty of Penn State (especially Professor Dennis Jett) for hosting me to speak about Iraq, my experiences at war with the Department of State and my new book Ghosts of Tom Joad.

It is a positive and gratifying thing to realize that there are young people passionately interested in what is happening to our nation, and who instinctively grasp the connection between the horrific loss of life and spending of taxpayer money in wars like Iraq (Afghanistan, Libya, etc.) and the decay here at home. Why did we waste so much building things and trying to promote businesses in Iraq when so much is needed at home? they asked. They got it.

There were also a number of foreign students, from China, Turkey, Japan and elsewhere taking notes on our America. I think they got it too.

Are you not concerned that you will be included in the group branded ‘un american’ when the next wave of purgery by the state friendly media rolls over us?
If you are, what are you going to do about it?

“There were also a number of foreign students, from China…”

Sorry to harsh your buzz, but I know from experience that almost 100 percent of those Chinese students were mainly interested in:

      1. Improving their English by listening to you, and,

      2. Reporting back to their handlers in China’s Ministry of State Security (who monitor ALL, ALL Chinese university students in foreign countries!), who have already asked them to report on you and what you say – NOT because they are sympathetic to what you say or write, but because Chinese spooks regard it as evidence of what’s wrong with America, and they will try to use it in that way…

…although, the fact is that since what you say and write won’t do any practical good for the Chinese Communist Party (and in fact what you say and write is AGAINST the interests of the Chinese Communist Party and their cliques of financier robber barons!), the END RESULT of the notes that those Chinese students took about you, will be:

      1. (Chinese Student): “Van Buren gave talk against America economic system!”

      2. (Chinese Student’s handler in China’s Ministry of State Security): “Thank you, good job. Now just shut up about it, because if America’s system goes down, so does China.”

      And no I’m not joking.

BTW, Peter, suddenly it struck me:

In the above photo of you, you look a lot like Burl Ives!

And coming from me, that’s a compliment. (Although some people might think a compliment from ME is an indictment, but to hell with them!) Because I think of Burl Ives as a personification of what is BEST in America!

I think of Burl Ives as the Jovian (Jupiter) sibling of the Saturnian Uncle Sam. The more generous and humourous and agreeably fatter brother of the Calvinist, penny-pinching, cruelly thin Uncle Sam.

Uncle Sam says, “Get a job!” But Burl Ives sings about “silver and gold…how do you measure its worth? Just by the pleasure it gives here on Earth…”

…as in this scene from “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” (1964) – which I know you were raised on, being of my generation – and here, the snowman was modeled on Burl Ives, who personally performed the snowman’s voice:

PS, but then, hmmm… Yes even in 1964, EVEN IN “RUDOLPH”!, America’s DARK side couldn’t help but manifest itself!

I mean, take a look at Santa in “Rudolph”. Santa was a typical one-percenter, caring only about himself and the bottom line!:
