• Obama in Hanoi: Vietnam Arms Embargo to Be Fully Lifted

What other nation on earth would signal its intent to “bury the hatchet, and what it believes to be the start of a new relationship, other than the United States, by lifting an arms embargo?

The United States is rescinding a decades-old ban on sales of lethal military equipment to Vietnam, President Obama announced at a news conference in Hanoi on Monday, ending what the New York Times called “one of the last legal vestiges of the Vietnam War.”

“The decision to lift the ban was not based on China or any other considerations,” Obama said. “It was based on our desire to complete what has been a lengthy process of moving toward normalization with Vietnam.”

So, to sum up: the sale of weapons is a sign of normalization. Appropriate, in that that is what is normal in America’s foreign relations in the 21st century. Not whether a nation is an ally or adversary per se, but whether they are a customer for our defense industry. For example, Saudi Arabia. Sure, they fund Sunni terrorism globally and played a role in the horrible events of 9/11, but they are also one of America’s most prolific buyers of weapons, and so are courted.

As for the arms ban being “one of the last legal vestiges of the Vietnam War,” one does wonder what the Vietnamese might have say about that.

Started under false pretenses and brutally fought for unclear purposes, America’s war on Vietnam took a terrible toll. No one really knows, but estimates of the death count on the Vietnamese side run from half a million to a million and half. That is before you include the untold numbers who continue to die or suffer birth defects due to the prolific use of defoliants like Agent Orange. While the American deaths in the war were “voluntary” in the sense that America started the war and pointlessly continued it for years, the Vietnamese had no choice.

To now say that bygones are bygones, and seal the deal with the export of American weapons into Vietnam, seems a new low in cynicism by a fading American Empire.

The spinning of the Vietnam war has started as promised. Kerry’s essay in today’s NYTimes about the aftermath makes me feel giddy about how wonderful the whole thing turned out. Student exchanges, tourism- “shared” security concerns. How many sons of Vietnamese soldiers who died would have the funds let alone the compunction to visit America-perhaps find the small home town of the GI who killed their father and tearfully embrace the whole farm family? “My father was wrong to resist America’s good intentions. We foolishly insulted America’s pride because we did not understand its cause. Our stubborness caused the American juggernaut to have to resort to regrettable behavior. We were uneducated and provincial. It was all our fault. Forgive us.”

Meanwhile, .while in Vietnam..that scum sucking pig fucker we call our Prez., has the goddamned audacity to call the Hellfire delivered death of Mullah Mansour, “an important milestone.”

Said in a statement, released just as he was meeting with top officials in Vietnam, that the United States had “removed the leader of an organization that has continued to plot against and unleash attacks on American and coalition forces.”

No asshole, let me tell you what an “important milestone” is. The day YOU are “removed as the WAR CRIMINAL leader of an organization that has continued to plot against and unleash ILLEGAL attacks against humanity across the entire fucking planet.

Seriously? Selling weapons is a sign of normalcy?

And just when I thought the American government couldn’t go any lower…

Unfortunately for the inhabitants of earth a fading empire can still engender a fast fade out of all mankind. Hillary if POTUS will need to “man up” if dissed by some minor militant warlord. “Huma, the codes, bring me the codes.”

Very few have pondered that America’s current leaders and recent leaders are insane. It is just too hard to accept particularly for those with a religious bent. How can the POTUS be so deranged and still function as a family man who has beers with colleagues? Study the Nazis to understand that insanity can seem so “normal”. A German concentration camp worker who has herded children into the gas showers can come home and hug his children after his work day and make small talk around the dinner table.

We want VietNam, and the Philippines, etc. to be ready to fight China for us. (See what I meant? “I know. Let’s you and him fight.”) Obama’s also promoting the TPP with this visit. Which will create more cheap-ass slave labor jobs in VietNam working for American companies like Apple for 2 bucks a day. Bringing corporate “free-market” capitalism to the commies.

I’ve seen estimates of 3 million Vietnamese deaths credited to the US war in VietNam. Not only the immediate deaths, but the residual effects of Agent Orange and the unexploded ordnance we left laying around that still kill or maim the people who accidently step on them. We refuse to help VietNam find and get rid of all those deadly landmines. Because “America looks forward, not back”, as Obama says.

Obama’s spokesman said that we have some lingering concerns about VietNam’s human rights’ record; which is really ironic coming from the country that invaded VietNam, killed millions of people who were no threat to us, secretly supported Pol Pot and the Kmer Rouge, and now exploit that country – thus encouraging the human rights’ problems in question – for the benefit of American corporations.

PS: Here’s a line from Oblahblah’s “Address to the People of VietNam” the other day: “Vietnam is an independent, sovereign nation, and no other nation can impose its will on you or decide your destiny.”

Let THAT roll around in your head for a few minutes.

teri: I trust that the line was actually said and if so then Obama must be a programmed cyborg. Even Kerry would have choked on those words. Wait, America granted them their independence-
Now I get it. My bad!

So all that Commie fear-mongering was for nothing. They might as well fill in that trench in the National Mall and replace it with a monument of Alfred E. Neumann to honor the Mad, Mad Dumbest Country on the Planet for believing the Domino Theory was ever a threat to US.

Why do our commenerations have to be bronze, marble or granite? Animatronics! That’s the ticket. Erect GIs at the base of a huge leaning domino. As the GIs slump one by one to the ground the domino becomes fully erect. Damn, I’d visit it daily as long as I knew Disney had a hand in the final opeation.
