• Martin Luther King Day: Lady Liberty is Black

The United States will release a gold coin featuring Lady Liberty as a Black woman, the first time she has been depicted as anything other than white on the nation’s currency.

“Part of our intent was to honor our tradition and heritage,” stated a spokesperson from the Mint. “But we also think it’s always worthwhile to have a conversation about liberty, and we certainly have started that conversation.”

Good for everyone. Only the most dark hearted could be upset that a fictional character is represented in any particular way. This can’t be bad.

…Unless we acknowledge that America is apparently satisfied with “having conversations,” raising awareness about race, and various other symbolic gestures. The Academy Awards are coming up, and lots of people will be keeping track of how many are given out to non-white men and making much of the tally, their “much” depending on which side the scale tips. Gestures of all types are all good enough on their own, but they never really affect much. The issues of race stretch back to the Founders, well before we elected a Black president and then elected one who throws racist statements around on Twitter. We’re still dealing with the same questions.

The same day the new liberty coin was announced, the Department of Justice released a terrifying report describing the failures throughout the Chicago Police Department, saying excessive force was rampant, rarely challenged and chiefly aimed at African-Americans and Latinos. The report was released as Chicago faces skyrocketing violence, with murders are at a 20-year high, and a deep lack of trust among the city’s Black and white residents. And yeah, of course, the police force is very, very white.

Where was this report a year ago, or eight years ago, or ten years ago? Because the implication here is that the Obama administration issued this in its final days, allowing it (and not any solution or progress) to be part of his legacy. Suspecting Trump will not make dealing with these issues a priority, Obama’s DOJ can take credit for “starting a conversation” about Chicago while walking away from the heavy lifting of helping fix it. Hell, DOJ might as well have issued a commemorative coin in lieu of the report.

We all know the rest: 1 in every 15 African American men are incarcerated in comparison to 1 in every 106 white men. According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, one in three Black men can expect to go to prison in their lifetime. Once convicted, Black offenders receive longer sentences compared to white offenders. You can find similar numbers for poverty (nearly a quarter of blacks are living in poverty, almost the same as in 1976), unemployment (double that of whites), life expectancy, and voter disenfranchisement.

Clearly over the last seven decades somebody could have fixed some of that. It can’t all be impossible.

Now, there has been some progress. America wrapped up formal slavery in 1865, only 76 years after the Bill of Rights. And then it was only another 100 some years before the Civil Rights laws tried hard to grant Blacks the rights the 1865 victory gave them. We don’t have lynchings and killings much anymore (though the Chicago PD keeps its hand in) and places that wish to discriminate against Blacks have to do it much more subtlety.

I’m not making light of suffering, but I am using sarcasm to show how angry I am about lack of real progress. We seem content to see presence as progress — first Black major leaguer, first Black Supreme Court Justice, first Black _____, first Black president. Again, there is nothing bad there, but now that the top box has been checked, what happens next?

In other words, we get Martin Luther King day as a Federal holiday while at the same time we don’t get the values King embodied. There you go. As one person put it “The Dr. King we choose to remember was indeed the symbolic beacon of the civil rights movement. But the Dr. King we forget worked within institutions to transform broken systems.” Change is not organic; it must be made to happen.

It is hard to come to any conclusion other than we as a society just don’t care. There are so many excuses (he was blocked by the Republicans, they’re still a tiny minority in Congress, the media, etc.) but even America’s Black president failed hard to make much of a real difference. We seem satisfied with symbolic gestures, blowing them out of proportion while the real problems sit in plain sight, unattended. What people will characterize over the next four years as sliding backwards on racial progress seems more like business as usual, albeit without the eloquent speeches.

BONUS: Someone will label me a racist for this. Someone on Twitter will tell me to go f*ck myself. Many people will tell me because of my race I have no understanding, even no right, to talk about these issues. Others will claim I shower with Trump. OK if any of that makes you feel better, but none of that changes what I’ve said.

EXTRA BONUS: Just got accused of “white-splaining” because of this. Apparently that is a thing.

      Peter,

      As a black man….. I say…… Thank you.

And I don’t see what you have stated as racism… I see it as brave. And…. A needed conversation.

And, the problem is not about a lack of progress…. Its about a lack of patience.
      And a lack of drive.

A LOT has changed since 1865. And…. Those changes occured because of people just like King.

And… For the record…. Changing the coins…. Pisses me off.
It is in effect….. Rewriting history.

And I’m proud of my history. Very proud.

I’m sure that people of other races all have things in their past’s… That ancestors did…. That they should be hung for.

Native Americans… They regularly raided and stole women, slaves, food… Etc.

The Scots…same thing… Rome was founded on it.

What we as blacks went through, hundreds of years ago…. Was accepted normal then. Now… No.

Hell….. Most of the time…. Other blacks sold captives into slavery with the white slave traders.

Point being…. it was accepted behaviors even within the black society

Example……history of the last name…. Van Buren.

Van Buren most often originated as a Dutch habitational name for someone from one of the many places in the Netherlands named with the Middle Dutch buur or buer, meaning “cottage or shed.” The name most often denoted someone from Buren, a small city in the Dutch province of Gelderland.

Some places…. If you use the history of the name….. This would be called…. Shiftless…

      Your not….

What little I know….. Your a bigger workaholic than I am.

My point being… Every race has things in its past… That should never have happened… And… Rewriting history… Changing a coin… Making “allowances” because of race… Changing the grading scale… Hiring because of color….not discussing the problems….. Requiring movies to have such and such percentage of non-white actors and actresses….. being afraid to say ‘Black’…. Using the term ” people of color”… Or ” American’s of color”…

Is every bit as racist as hanging me from a tree… For being an “uppity nigger”.

Or….. If I win… Because I was given a 50 lap headstart…… Because someone was mean to my great, great, great grandmother…..

      Did I really win?????

      Or…. Did I win….. Because of racism????

      Racism….. Its just as bad…… Either way…..kick me because I’m black…. Or….. Don’t kick me because I’m black.

      Translation…..

See me as a MAN…….. Not a BLACK MAN !

That was Dr. Rev. King’s message.

Chicago…. That place just pisses me off.
Simply because… On both sides… It reinforces the stereotypes of both blacks…. And whites.

No one forces the ‘blacks’ there to commit crimes. And…. No one forces black on black crime.

      Crime is crime.

The white cops…… The cops period….. When they see so much crime being committed by blacks….. Only a fool would believe that it does not effect their view of criminals.

Want things to change there?…… Improve the economics….. Sponsor policies and decisions that inspire business.
Rather than “elect” a man because he’s black…. Thinking that will make it all better.
Fire the chief of police…. Hire a new one…. Because he’s black….. Not because he’s the best out there.

(side note…..couple years ago… I watched a White chief of police…. Walk alone into a crowd of 500 blacks…. Walk right up to the leadership and say… “calm this shut down…. We will get the people who did this….but….. We can’t til this shit is calmed down! ”

it calmed down… 5 minutes later.

The chief… He was able to do that because of RESPECT…… Not color. )

Work to raise the standard of living….. By…. Inspiring business….. Also known as ….jobs….

And change that thing they call…. An education system…… I don’t know what it is…… But….. Education…… Its not that.

      The incarceration rate…. Yep…. Its high….. Some circles….. Its called…. Repeat offenders.

What would be a really interesting thing to see….the ratio of black arresting officers…. To black suspects… And white officers… White suspects…. Etc…

To do an actual… Non bias … Study of crime… Nationwide….

That would be an eye opener.

My guess would be…. In places like the west coast… White and Hispanic arrests are higher.
      Oklahoma…. Indians and whites.
      The ‘south’… Black and white….

Mississippi….. Hell… Everyone goes to jail there.

My personal history….. I should have been one of the three. I could have been one of the greats. Bigtime.

Instead…. I made an active decision to not be the stereotype. An active decision to be successful.

An active decision to NOT be a criminal. (believe me… I had my chances to go that way).

And, I’m not the only one. I have a friend. Black, doctor, he grew up in Chicago. He could have been one of the real greats.

      To cause change… Real change….. It will require a willingness…. And a desire….to succeed…

Btw….. The change….. It NEEDS to start with realtors.
A group of individuals deciding where another group should and should not live?????

Unless…. I’m the only person out the that wonders why… Populations are grouped by race in this nation????

Will the pussy grabber pervert revert his Muslim ban?

DONALD TRUMP called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the country–

“Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life,” Trump said.

Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, asked in an email if the shutdown would apply specifically to immigration or more broadly to student visas, tourists, and other travelers to the United States, replied: “Everyone.”

Before we do that, let US do what other countries do– ban pussy grabber sex perverts.

      Something for you to read…

“The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone. ”

Fuck you. I wasn’t “afraid” of using BLACK as descriptor of a persons skin color. The fact is…I don’t label Asians YELLOW. I don’t label American Indians RED. I don’t label Mid Eastern peoples OLIVE or whatthefuckingever. The only time I’ve EVER referenced anyone in relationship to their skin color in this comment section was that post.

Furthermore, I don’t give a shit what color you are. The only problem I had, is ONE post, where you pointed fingers at immigrants who were LEGALLY brought to the US by the USG. PERIOD. Now, if you insist on labeling ME..as a “racist” SIMPLY because I used the term “Americans of color” ONE FUCKING TIME…so be it…that’s YOUR fucking problem..not mine. Comprende?
However, I don’t give a flying fuck what you think. Nor do I give a fuck if your black, yellow, green, purple or chartreuse. What matters is respect as a human being. THAT is why I reacted to YOUR own seemingly “racism” directed at “legal” immigrants. It reeked of blatant hypocrisy.

One thing is blindingly clear here though. I don’t see anyone here other than yourself, CONTINUOUSLY.. slapping themselves on the back for overcoming adversity, notwithstanding congratulating themselves for becoming “successful”, in spite of their skin color. I don’t give a fuck. Good for you. On the other hand, I don’t give a fuck if you, Rich or anyone else here is “successful” or whatever either. I only come here to comment on Peters posts. Unfortunately, ever since you arrived on the scene, things have devolved into bullshit attacks on other peoples character here, my own included. But here’s the thing.

I’M NOT GOING ANYWHERE. I’m still going to post what I think regardless of your bullshit.

This is much deeper than Trumps “dossier”, although it’s related. But it’s only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. I know one thing, there’s more to the “dossier” than OUR government is letting on.. at least for now. And I’m not the only one who thinks so..

Violence solves nothing. I want a rhino to f–k @SpeakerRyan to death with its horn because it’s FUNNY, not because he’s a #GOPmurderbro,” Whedon tweeted.

      …….

      “.
Pamela Taylor thought she was living the American dream when she and her husband bought a two-acre plot of land near the Texas border in Brownsville seven decades ago.

She would never have predicted her one-story brick home, surrounded by bright pink bougainvillea bushes and mesquite trees, would become a makeshift crash pad and hideout for border crossers, drug smugglers and human traffickers.

Its a way of life now, Taylor told FoxNews.com. They come every day.

Taylor, whose property is on the front line of the border battle, says illegal immigrants have been using her land to sneak into the U.S. for years. One day, the 90-year-old grandmother recalled, she even walked into her living room to find a border crosser trying to evade capture.

He had come into my house and was just sitting in my rocking chair watching Border Patrol go by, she said. It was terrifying.

Another time, drug dealers stashed 30 pounds of marijuana under her bougainvillea bush.

Taylor is not alone. On a recent tour of border towns in south Texas, FoxNews.com spoke with residents like Taylor as well as business owners and local law enforcement about the daily fears people face as they live and work in what amounts to disputed territory.

Many describe a deteriorating situation where illegal immigration is on the rise but few can do anything about it for fear of retaliation by cartels, human traffickers and even some authorities.

Its hard to know who to trust, Taylor said. She added that while she has a good rapport with local law enforcement on the ground, Its the ones who sit in the office they dont care about us.

Several residents FoxNews.com spoke to near the border say they feel forgotten.

We live here, we work here and raise our children here but every day we see [border crossers, drug smugglers] and nothing changes, said McAllen resident Milo, who asked FoxNews.com not to use his last name out of safety concerns. Ive seen [drug and human trafficking] scouts on our street with Border Patrol parked down the road. They dont do anything.

He also said he’s seen “SUVs sitting in front of the house” after reporting suspicious activity.

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, vowing a ramp-up in border and immigration enforcement — and the construction of a controversial U.S.-Mexico border wall — the outgoing Obama administration has taken some steps to boost enforcement.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection last year dispatched 150 more agents to police the southwestern border.

But Taylor said her area still is used as a “funnel” for people illegally crossing the border.

Some paddle across the river while others hide in the field waiting for their coyote or smuggler to pick them up. Some stroll in through a gigantic gap in the border barrier near her house.

Taylor says she always calls the authorities to report criminal activity on her property, including when she found the marijuana stash. But she also said she worries she could be putting herself and her family in danger.

In south Texas, Mexican and South American cartels have been able to infiltrate law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Several former law enforcement officials from an anti-narcotics force in the Rio Grande Valley are currently serving lengthy prison sentences for drug crimes and corruption.

In 2016, Border Patrol agent Joel Luna was charged with capital murder for the March 2015 beheading of an undocumented Honduran immigrant. Luna, a south Texas native and Army combat veteran, allegedly decapitated Palacio Paz and left his headless body floating in the bay. Prosecutors claim Luna was part of a cartel drug trafficking conspiracy with his brothers. Luna has pleaded not guilty.

In November, Border Patrol agent Eduardo Bazen Jr., also was arrested after being accused of working with a drug trafficking organization. According to the criminal complaint, Bazen said he was paid $8,000 for falsifying a 2007 drug bust and admitted to lying about suspects being present at the scene.

The drug trade even more so than human trafficking has skyrocketed in recent years along the border.

In fiscal 2016, nearly 1.3 million pounds of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines were seized along the southwest border, according to U.S. Border Patrol.

Cameron County Sheriffs Office Lt. Robert Rodriguez told FoxNews.com the cartels are constantly reinventing ways to smuggle drugs into the U.S.

They change tactics all the time, he said, adding that drug runners are now using large makeshift rafts to float trucks, fully loaded with drugs, across the Rio Grande. They always seem to be one step ahead.

As for residents living along the border, some have sold their property and moved. For Taylor, thats not an option.

Why should I move? I havent done anything wrong,” she said.

Instead, she locks her doors but leaves food and water out for anyone who needs it.

I always ask Are you hungry? she said. I will feed them but they know I will also be calling Border Patrol. ”

KFC just reached finger lickin’ levels of freaky.

The fast food chain recently debuted facial recognition technology at a restaurant in Beijing, China, thanks to a partnership with the Chinese search engine Baidu. A spokesperson for KFC told The Guardian that the artificial intelligence-enabled system provides meal recommendations based on a consumer’s age and mood.

According to a Baidu press release obtained by Tech Crunch, the machine would offer a male customer in his early 20s something like “a set meal of crispy chicken hamburger, roasted chicken wings and Coke.” On the other hand, a female customer in her 50s would be given a recommendation of “porridge and soybean milk for breakfast.”

After making the meal assessment based on your features, the AI-enabled machine can reportedly save the picture of your face to remember your order for future KFC visits.

Perhaps the most troubling thing about this kind of technology ― aside from fast food giants gathering personal data on your eating habits and the sexist and ageist suggestions ― is that eating is an incredibly personal (and human) experience.

Food is all about choice. Choosing what you want to eat, where you want to eat it, how much you want to pay for it and who you want to eat it with. Of course you can override the machine’s suggestions from this KFC assessment, but why would you want them in the first place?

      Bloodthirsty,

Something for you to claw into.

Yes… Your right….. Just bring the refugees in…. Stateless and all… No backgrounds… No vetting…..

Hmmm…. Let’s see how they like Baldwin, Michigan for starters.

The man suspected of carrying out the New Year’s Eve attack on a nightclub in Istanbul was trained in Afghanistan, the city’s governor says.
Vasip Sahin said the man, named earlier as Uzbek national Abdulkadir Masharipov, was believed to have entered Turkey in January 2016.
Mr Sahin said the suspect had confessed to the attack and that his fingerprints matched those found at the scene.
Thirty-nine people died in the attack on the Reina club with dozens wounded.
Citizens of Israel, France, Tunisia, Lebanon, India, Belgium, Jordan and Saudi Arabia were among the victims.
So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the attack, saying it was revenge for Turkish military involvement in Syria.
Police arrested the man on Monday evening in a raid on an address in the Istanbul suburb of Esenyurt. Another man and three women were also detained.
A picture of Abdulkadir Masharipov taken shortly after his arrest showed him being held by the neck by an officer with his face bruised and bloodied.
      Who is Abdulkadir Masharipov?
      Image caption
The suspect is an Uzbek national
Born in 1983. Originally from the Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan, he reportedly arrived in Konya, central Turkey, with his family at the beginning of 2016
Said to have assumed the name Ebu Muhammed Horasani
Described by Turkish media as a member of the Islamic State group
Mr Sahin said that contrary to earlier reports, the suspect’s four year-old son was not with him when he was arrested.
“He was trained in Afghanistan and can speak four languages. He’s a well-trained terrorist,” the governor added.
Police also seized pistols, ammunition and foreign currency in the raid, Mr Sahin said.
The attack on the nightclub began when the gunman arrived at the club by taxi before rushing through the entrance with a long-barrelled gun taken from the boot of the car.
He fired randomly at people celebrating the New Year.
A huge manhunt was launched amid fears that the gunman had escaped Turkey, perhaps to territory held by IS.

It will be the main place for protest, replacing Freedom Plaza, but Freedom Plaza will still be a gathering space. ( I do not now work for the DC Govt. or a tourist agency in dc).

Can’t wait for this Trump party to get started. The next four years are gonna blow the evil-gelicals away.

Trump’s shower buddy, Putin, said he hoped that Moscow and Washington could eventually get their troubled relations back to normal. (Normal is not a good state of affairs.)

He also insisted that the accusations that Trump engaged in sexual acts with prostitutes while in Moscow are “fake” and “nonsense.”

“I find it hard to believe that he rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world,” Putin said, according to Bloomberg News.

      He would know.
