We’re Still Here, 1/20/17, Consumed Most of All by Our Fears
One of my favorite quotes includes the lines “I awoke this morning to find that it was not judgment day – only morning. Morning: excellent and fair.” I think that sums up a part of my thinking, but certainly not all.
A nuclear reckoning, war with China, or anything else quite so violently apocalyptic is imminent, or even underway, as far too many of us think. I live in one of those bubbles, the sum of which make up America now. Many of the people I talk to, in person and here online, seem to believe, truly believe, the world is coming to something of an end. These are by and large educated, once-rational people, some of whom have been voices of reason in the past. They are not that way now.We are however falling, some important threads of our nation being teased apart, and our best days are behind us. But this did not start on November 8, 2016, or January 20, 2017, thoough historians will note those dates as significant milestones (same as September 11, 2001.) But not because of Donald Trump. Because his name just happened to be attached to what has been growing inside us since the end of WWII.
The Russians did not elect Trump. They may or may not have tried to get involved in the election, but we did this to ourselves. As the historian you have probably not read but should read Morris Berman predicted years ago, we are eating each other.
We are consumed most of all by our fears. Fear of what the Soviets, and maybe the Chinese, would do after WWII. We created a nuclear arsenal measured in how many multiples of times it could destroy the world. We dragged our country through disasters like Vietnam, that murdered so many and cracked apart our nation. Our fear of race, our war on drugs, and then of course our fear of a world beyond our control after 9/11. Another quote that seems to fit is “The leader of genius must have the ability to make different opponents appear as if they belonged to one category.”The fears were encouraged at every opportunity by those who profited from them, either by rawly making money, or by acquiring power and control, or in most cases, both. We are unconcerned — it’s normal — that politicians routinely leave office wealthy despite modest salaries. We have so much, and share so little. We enthusiastically abandoned so many of the good things about America, such as our Bill of Rights. America’s pre-WWII Constitutional Era was grossly imperfect. Yet for its obvious failings, there was a sense of the possibility of progress; halting, awkward, unfinished, but, well, for lack of a better word and to use a word that has become a symbol of modern irony, hope.
Of course none of that was close to perfect, but it was good and it is gone in some arenas and going away in most of the rest. We’ll still be allowed to rant on Twitter, a modern day bread and circus, but the real stuff of standing up and speaking back to government will happen only with handfuls of whistleblowers who will sacrifice their lives and freedom to say what they need to say.
I thought we had a chance at change in 2008 but instead was proven to be a dupe. I thought he might turn it all around, in those first weeks he could have asked the rivers to flow backwards and they just might have. He could have grounded the drones, torn up the Patriot Act, held truth commissions to bring into the light our tortures, re-emancipated America in ways not unlike Lincoln did in the 1860s. Slam shut the gates of Guantanamo, close the secret prisons that even today still ooze pus in Afghanistan, stop the militarization of Africa, bring the troops home, all of it, just have done it. What a change, what a path forward, what a rebirth for an America who had lost her way so perilously. One man could have made a difference and when he did not even try, he helped solidify in America a sense of cynicism and powerlessness that empowers evil people further. If there was no Obama there would be no Trump.A new generation, and me again, thought there was another chance with Bernie Sanders. We were stupid. He was a distraction, and showed his true colors throwing away everything he said previously to support a candidate of the same old old school we’ve been voting for since WWII.
Trump is at best/worst a symbol of all this. How powerful people play us against each other and exploit our differences. How fear (currently fear of Trump filtered through fear of Putin) can be used to manipulate us. How the ideas of democracy can be so easily tossed aside so that our most progressive thinkers are convinced elections are illegitimate, and anything from silly name calling to demands for something akin to a coup are justified when the enemy is as perceived evil as Trump. Echoing the famous lines from Vietnam, it is in their minds necessary to destroy democracy in order to save it.
I’ve written here before open letters to my daughters, talking about the world they are maturing into. This is in that spirit. Somebody, maybe them, is one day going to stop and wonder how they got to where they ended up, an oligarchy that profits from mouthing the nice words of our Founders while ignoring them. Maybe they will find this essay, dated for convenience only, January 20, 2017.

“‘DEPLORABALL’ DIVIDE Trump supporters met by protesters in chaotic scene

Trump supporters arriving for the Deploraball inauguration celebration in Washington on Thursday night were greeted by screaming profanities and threats as they entered the National Press Club Building.
Some of the hundreds of protesters sprayed Mace, while others were peaceful as law enforcement officers lined the streets to monitor the chaotic scene. At least one passerby reported bottles were being thrown as he showed off a gash in his head.
The Deploraball, organized by the pro-Trump organization MAGA3X, saw more than 1,000 invited guests celebrate on the eve of the President-elects swearing in.
The main goal of the evening, according to organizers, was to celebrate.
Deploraball is a coming out party for a new type of Republican, Jeff Giesea told FoxNews.com. People are threatening us, and its uncalled for.
The event had earlier been reported to be the target of threats from anti-Trump groups, but the FBI and D.C. law enforcement officials told Foxnews.com that they did not know of any credible threats surrounding any inauguration events.
Just look at which way their guns are facing! one protester told Foxnews.com. about the police presence US! Not them.
Were not attacking anyone!, another protester said.
That was not the case for James Allsup, 21, of Seattle, whose head was gushing blood as he sat surrounded by police officers on the side of the road.
I was wearing my Make America Great Again hat, and a white male came up behind me and swung at me with a flagpole I kind of blacked out for a minute, Allsup told FoxNews.com. Before I knew it, my head was gushing blood theres blood on my Trump hat.
Allsup told FoxNews.com that he and a friend were simply grabbing drinks in the neighborhood and walked through the street where protesters were gathered.
Im all for disagreeing, I debate people all the time and I want to engage in these discussions, but theyre throwing bottles, Allsup told Foxnews.com. I would be livid if people who supported Trump were doing this to Hillary supporters.
Inside the National Press Club, the deplorables at the Deploraball continued to celebrate.
This ball is for the people, and by the people, Giesea said. This is not some stuffy Washington ball.
But when asked about the protesters, one woman, dressed in a sparkly sash reading Mrs. Deplorable, laughed.
So, lets take care of those little deplorables outside those protesters, She told FoxNews.com. They really just need to go and get a job. ”

Some 75 Girl Scouts said they wanted to participate in the organizations tradition of being at the presidential inauguration.
But unlike any other time, they are coming under fire.
On social media and in essays published online, many women are denouncing the Girl Scouts of the USA for its plans to continue its tradition and take part in the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump on Friday.
The critics say that an organization like the Girl Scouts, which seeks to empower young females, should boycott Trumps inauguration because of the scandals surrounding alleged sexual harassment by the president-elect years ago as well as an audio recording of him using salacious language to refer to women.
Some also cited Vice President-elect Mike Pences anti-abortion views as a reason that the Girl Scouts should skip the ceremonies.
But the Girl Scouts organization, which notes that it is non-political, says it will not make an exception to a tradition it has observed for decades, regardless of which party and which candidate wins the presidential election.
In a statement sent to FoxNews.com, the organization stressed that it is accommodating the desire of 75 girls from the Girl Scouts of Nation’s Capital Council. The girls were among hundreds responding to a message posted in August on the council’s website, well before the election. The council conducted surveys and selected the finalists.
Being truly non-partisan means that we keep our focus on the girls. It means that we go where they lead, the statement said. It means we can no more turn our back on 75 girls who have chosen to participate in the peaceful transition of power any more than we can on the thousands of girls participating in Womens Marches the next day.
The fact is, people often use Girl Scouts as an outlet to try to make a political statement, it continued.
We are girl-led and girl-driven, and our job, our mission, is to empower them to make their own choices, and express their own views.
Some of the critics have been former Girl Scouts, such as Jean Hannah Edelstein, who made her objection known in an essay in The Guardian.
The news that the Girl Scouts are sending a contingent to participate in Donald Trumps inauguration filled me with real rage, Edelstein wrote. Yes, its a tradition: theyve marched at inauguration for decades. But does tradition justify collaboration with an administration that promises to oppress the young women its supposed to serve?
Many published reports noted that never before has the organizations participation in the presidential election created such an outcry, even when other presidents, such as Bill Clinton, were trailed by scandals involving the treatment of women.
Our legacy is one of uniting, not dividing, and our mission is fundamentally about bringing girls of all backgrounds together to discover their talents, the organization said, and unlock their leadership potential, so that they can lead all of us to the promise of a better day. ”

What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.

You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before.

This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.
We are one nation – and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams; and their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.
The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.
For many decades, we’ve enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry;
Subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military;
We’ve defended other nation’s borders while refusing to defend our own;
And spent trillions of dollars overseas while America’s infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay.
We’ve made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has disappeared over the horizon.
One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions upon millions of American workers left behind.
The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed across the entire world.
But that is the past. And now we are looking only to the future.
We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power.
From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land.
From this moment on, it’s going to be America First.
Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.
We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.
I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.
America will start winning again, winning like never before.
We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.

We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to follow.
We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones – and unite the civilized world against Radical Islamic Terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.
At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America, and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other.
When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.
The Bible tells us, “how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.”
We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity.
When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.
There should be no fear – we are protected, and we will always be protected.
We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement and, most importantly, we are protected by God.
Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger.
In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving.
We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action – constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.
The time for empty talk is over.
Now arrives the hour of action.
Do not let anyone tell you it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America.
We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.
We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow.
A new national pride will stir our souls, lift our sights, and heal our divisions.
It is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great American Flag.
And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the windswept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they fill their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty Creator.
So to all Americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words:
You will never be ignored again.
Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams, will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.
Together, We Will Make America Strong Again.
We Will Make America Wealthy Again.
We Will Make America Proud Again.
We Will Make America Safe Again.
And, Yes, Together, We Will Make America Great Again. Thank you, God Bless You, And God Bless America.

“Minutes after he was sworn in, any illusion that Trump would act in the best interests of families in this country as President were wiped away by a statement of priorities that constitute an historic mistake on one of the key crises facing our planet and an assault on public health, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said in a statement. What Trump has released is hardly a plan – its a polluter wishlist that will make our air and water dirtier, our climate and international relations more unstable, and our kids sicker. This is a shameful and dark start to Trumps Presidency, and a slap in the face to any American who thought Trump might pursue the national interest.
Elsewhere on the official sites Issues section, the new administration spelled out other top priorities, wasting no time in sending a message it plans to aggressively implement the new agenda.
On defense, the site vows to rebuild the military to give America firmer footing in pursuing peace through strength. On trade, the Trump administration intends to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. The site proposes a moratorium on new federal regulations and states that Trump will order the heads of federal agencies and departments to identify job-killing regulations that should be repealed. On crime, the new policies include plans to deport illegal immigrants with violent criminal records and to safeguard Second Amendment rights, which Trump believes allow Americans to ensure their own safety.
Much of the updated information simply makes official Trumps campaign promises, but the speed with which they were posted on the site could send a signal to critics and supporters alike that Trump intends to follow through on his agenda.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow emotionally proclaimed Trump’s “America’s First” slogan has “very dark echoes in American history.”
“There was an America First Committee that formed in this country, hundreds of thousands of people in this country, some of the richest businessmen in the country who were part of it, they were formed to keep us out of World War II. They were infiltrated by the Nazis, many of them are anti-Semitic, part of why they weren’t alarmed by Hitler’s rise in Germany,” Maddow said.
Over on ABC, journalist Terry Moran echoed Maddow’s comments saying Trump’s speech reminded him of the 1930s.
“It carries with it overtones from the 1930s when an anti-Semitic movement saying, ‘We don’t want to get involved in Europe’s war. It’s the Jews fault in Germany!'”
Reps for ABC and MSNBC did not immediately return requests for comment.

Violent and destructive Inauguration Day protests escalated Friday afternoon ahead of the ceremonial parade, as demonstrators smashed window fronts and clashed with police — who used pepper spray and tear gas to try and control the crowd.
Authorities said roughly 90 people have been arrested so far.
In the downtown Washington area, blocks north of the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route, black-clad protesters hurled rocks at police in riot guard who used pepper spray and explosives, known as flash bangs, in response.
At least three officers from the Metropolitan Police Department, the District of Columbias agency, suffered non-life-threatening injuries related to demonstrators smashing several storefronts shortly after noon — damaging a Bank of America, Starbucks and McDonald’s about four blocks east of the White House.
A car in the area also was reportedly set on fire.
MPD Chief Peter Newsham said the rioters caused significant damage to the businesses and that a bystander also was injured.
He also said that he is so far pleased with MPD’s response to the incidents and that the department is prepared for anything else.
Protesters started in the pre-dawn hours holding rallies and blocking entrances to security checkpoints.
Members of Black Lives Matter forced the Secret Service to close one checkpoint after hours of sitting in front of the gates and chaining themselves to fences to keep visitors from getting to the parade and other official inauguration events.
A Kansas couple told FoxNews.com they were attacked at the checkpoint by demonstrators.
Celeste Sollars, who said she and her husband came to town from Kansas to see the inauguration, said they were spit on and her husband was put in a chokehold by protesters.

Sollars said she was attacked — as demonstrators followed through on threats to disrupt President-elect Donald Trumps inaugural ceremonies.

Teen protects school bus from knife-wielding 10-year-old

Johnson County Deputies took a 10-year-old boy into custody on Thursday after they say he pulled out a knife on a school bus.
A 16-year-old Rio Vista High School student found herself confronting the danger directly to protect others on that bus.
Alexis Landry may only be 16 years old but is wise beyond her years. She found herself playing the role of protector and used her body to shield her classmates from a boy with a knife.
He made a hand gesture towards someone with the knife in his hand, she recalled. And he was putting it up to a little boys throat.
The superintendent says there were about 20 kids on board the bus. Landry was the oldest. The youngest passenger was in Pre-K.
They were all in complete panic, she said. Some of them were crying and screaming they wanted to go home.
The bus driver pulled over near a bridge on County Road 1109 to call 911. Three of the older kids jumped out the rear emergency exit, and the boy with the knife followed. According to Landry, the boy suddenly reappeared from the front door.
When I turned around, he put his right arm across my chest, Landry said. And with his left hand, he put his knife to my throat.
Landry says her only concern was for the other kids. She told the other students she wouldnt let the boy hurt them.

A FedEx courier from rural Illinois attending Donald Trumps inauguration in a donated suit broke down in tears Thursday night when offered a $10,000 check by the commander-in-chief.
Did that just happen? Shane Bouvet, 24, of Stonington, asked after meeting Trump backstage at the pre-inauguration concert at the Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Post reported.
Trump read about Bouvet, a struggling single father, in the Post Wednesday and told aides he wanted to meet the man.
The paper reported that Bouvet was invited to attend an inaugural ball as thanks for working on Trumps campaign in Illinois as a volunteer.
The invite required a suit and a nice pair of shoes, but Bouvet wasnt sure he could afford that, according to the paper. A friend bought him the suit and got a shoe seller to donate the shoes.
During the meeting with Trump, Bouvet called his father.
You have a good boy, Trump told Don Bouvet, according to the paper.
At the end Trump told an aide, Send him a check for $10,000.
Bouvet told WAND-TVin Decatur, Ill., that Trump told him he “would never have to worry again.”
The station reported Friday that Bouvelt said he felt like he was dreaming.
A photo on Trumps Instagram account shows the president-elect with Bouvet.

Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon, who opposes having the Trident submarine fleet based in Scotland, said reports of a failure and cover-up are a “hugely serious issue.”
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, also a Trident opponent, called it “a pretty catastrophic error.”
The British government hasn’t confirmed the newspaper’s report of a misfire.
A government statement posted on a Defense Ministry blog indicated there was a “routine unarmed Tridentmissiletest launch from HMS Vengeance” in June.
The Royal Navy launch was “part of an operation which is designed to certify the submarine and its crew,” the statement said. The Vengeance submarine and its crew were “successfully tested and certified,” it said.
The statement says the government does not provide further details on submarine operations for “obvious” national security reasons.
The British government’s website says Trident has provided Britain’s security every day for the last 46 years. The system consists of Vanguard-class submarines which can carry up to 16 Trident ballisticmissilesarmed with nuclear warheads.
Defense policy calls for one of the submarines to be on patrol at all times. ”

Australian authorities said Friday that a man intentionally plowed his car into pedestrians in a mall in Melbourne during lunch hour, killing at least three and injuring at least 20, but said terrorism was not a factor.
The 26-year-old driver of the maroon-colored car was described by witnesses as appearing Middle Eastern. One tourist told Melbournes Herald-Sun newspaper that Arabic music was blaring from the car.

In April of last year, Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House and admitted child rapist, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for paying his victims to keep quiet.
Hastert was sentenced, not for raping children, but for illegally structuring bank transactions in an effort to cover up his sexual abuse of young members of a wrestling team he coached.
Now, this pedophile is trying to get back that hush money. Because one of the boys he raped broke his silence, in spite of the $1.7 million in hush money Hastert gave him, this pedophile politician wants his money back.
When the victim, known only as ‘Individial A’, broke his silence, Hastert’s child rapes were exposed — resulting in the subsequent prosecution.
“To the extent any contract existed between plaintiff [Individual A] and defendant [Hastert], plaintiff breached that contract,” Hastert’s lawyers wrote.
“Plaintiff’s breach of conduct resulted in damages to defendant and plaintiff is accordingly required to return $1.7 million to defendant.”
Individual A did not go public with this information — he merely spoke to the FBI after the transactions were uncovered by investigators. The victim’s attorney, Kristi Browne told NBC that it was Hastert who was at fault.
“Mr. Hastert has decided that rather than live up to his promise to compensate his victim for his molestation and resulting injury, he will ask his victim to pay him,” she said in a statement.
“He admits to agreeing to make payments, but then denies that it is an agreement that he has to keep. His response is predictable and we look forward to entering the discovery phase of the case.”
Hastert, who happens to have a long and friendly past with none other than the Podesta family, is currently serving his sentence at the Federal prison hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Although Hastert wasn’t sentenced for the pedophilia, because the statute of limitations had run out, the judge labeled him a “serial child molester” and ordered him to enroll in a sex-offender treatment program. Hastert also admitted to, and apologized for, being a child rapist.
During the trial, Hastert admitted that he “mistreated” and “took advantage” of former students who came forward to say they were molested — three of them anonymously.
“What I did was wrong and I regret it,” he said at the time.
Disgustingly enough, this child rapist became speaker of the house after he’d raped these boys. Given the admitted and exposed widespread pedophilia among those in power, it is entirely possible, and indeed likely, that Hastert continued his disgusting abuse while serving as the house speaker.
Hastert only admitted to the abuse after a federal investigation. At first, the serial child molester denied the accusations and claimed to be a victim of extortion. However, an investigation later revealed the truth.
In spite of admitting to his crimes, Hastert is still victimizing Individual A by demanding he pay back the hush money.
According to NBC, not only does Hastert want his money back, he thinks Individual A should pay his attorney’s fees.

You pretend you have the moral high ground but you put that mans finger on the nuclear button, the unidentified woman said after a flight attendant left to get security.
That man doesnt believe in climate change, she said, referring to President Trump, and using air quotes to frame the word believe. Do you believe in gravity? Did you know gravity is just a theory?
Eventually, an airline staffer told the woman she would have to be removed from the plane.
No. I paid for this seat and Im sitting in it, she said. He is in my space.
The woman, seated next to her husband, continued refusing requests to leave.
Im going home now. My mother-in-law, his mother, diedIm going home now, she said. Theres no way Im getting off this planeMy husband lost his mother. Have some respect.

A second video showed people on the airplane cheering and chanting U.S.A.! as police escorted the woman off the plane.
Koteskey, in a Facebook post, said the woman was even more discourteous to him before the cameras began rolling. He said the entire incident was touched off when she asked if Koteskey was here to cheer or protest. Koteskey replied he was merely in town to celebrate democracy.

The singer directed her anger at Trump during a speech at the Womens March in Washington on Sunday. She told the crowd that she had at times been angry after the election and had thought “an awful lot about blowing up the White House.”
Madonna took to Instagram to try to clarify what she was trying to say. She said she was attempting to express there are two ways to respond to Trumps election: with hope or with outrage. She said she hopes to effect change “with love.”
Madonna wrote that she doesn’t promote violence and people should listen to her speech “in its entirety rather than one phrase taken wildly out of context.”
Madonnas speech contained numerous vulgar words, including dropping an f-bomb before giving some advice to Trump.
“It seems as though we had all slipped into a false sense of comfort, that justice would prevail and that good would win in the end,” the award-winning singer said.
“Well, good did not win this election. But good will win in the end,” Madonna said.
Later, she performed two of her hits, “Express Yourself” and “Human Nature.” During the latter, she led the crowd in a chant of “I’M NOT YOUR BITCH!”
A range of other performers and activists, including singers Alicia Keyes and Janelle Monae, trans advocate and writer Janet Mock, and filmmaker Michael Moore, also appeared onstage.
