Does a Secret State Department Office Promote Neo-Nazism?

Does a recently-created secret State Department office operate without oversight, promoting neo-Nazism? Well, the media says so.

Buried under a couple of layers in the bureaucracy of the long-standing Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration at State is the Office of Remigration. It has been there for about a year and while it does not appear on the State organization chart online, it does not appear otherwise to be much of a secret. In fact, if you call the main State Department phone number they’ll connect you. To be fair, the State Department has not publicly identified the senior official for the Office of Remigration, but does that really matter enough to call the whole operation secret, with nefarious intent? At least the office has a Wikipedia page.

But read a bit about the Office of Remigration and according to the mass media, the plot thickens. The New Republic headlines its own article “Trump’s Secret Team Focused on ‘Remigration’ Exposed.” Wired has the most comprehensive article, claiming “Apparently named after a racist, far-right scheme to expel minorities and immigrants, the office is responsible for processing payments possibly worth tens of millions of dollars to facilitate the deportation of immigrants to countries they may not even originally be from. ‘Who’s to know where the money goes because there’s no real monitoring, or any kind of accountability attached to these payments,’ a source said. ‘In fact, it was made pretty explicit to us by our leadership that they weren’t interested in applying the same levels of accountability as we had traditionally applied to any kind of federal funding that we were responsible for managing to international organizations or NGOs.’”

Maybe I can help expose some “secrets” for the Office of Remigration.

Any allegation oversight of the office has been relaxed would need to be distinguished from the legal oversight requirements that apply to all State Department offices. The Office of Remigration must by law operate under the same standards of accountability as the rest of the Department, and most every other office in government that does not live off a classified budget (and even they have accountability standards, albeit themselves classified). The Office of Remigration reports to the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, which reports to the newly-created position of Deputy Assistant Secretary Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, who reports to the Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs, and Religious Freedom, who reports to Marco Rubio. So any claim by Wired that there is not enough oversight needs some bureaucratic forensic work.

What any of these office do with the money Congress gives them is open to inquiry by Congress, by the various Inspectors General roaming the U.S. Government, and in the extreme, criminal investigation by the Department of Justice. An office deep inside State just cannot make up its own rules; when I was giving out literal boxes of USG cash on behalf of State to Iraqi “NGO” warlords with probable ties to terrorist groups during that war’s reconstruction, I had to create a long paper chain audited by my bosses. Even when the intelligence community hands over cash to a clandestine source they have to supply a receipt.

So what does this not-so-secret office actually do? It conducts the diplomacy, including paying USG debts, necessary to ensure third party countries will accept mostly non-resident deportees from America whose home country cannot or will not accept them. The Department of Homeland Security used to handle these chores but the increase in third country deportees apparently required a new office. Expelling migrants to third-countries that are not their place of origin is becoming a cornerstone of President Trump’s deportation strategy. On the list of places third country deportees have been sent to at one point or another are Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Rwanda, South Sudan, Eswatini, Kosovo, Equatorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Uganda, Paraguay, Honduras, Ecuador, Moldova, Poland, Uzbekistan, and Palau. Because of its proximity to the border, the vast majority of third country deportees are sent to Mexico. Many of the agreements which govern these “secret” transfers are online. The costs are in most cases not delved into by the press. However, a February 2026 congressional investigation reported that the U.S. had paid more than $32 million to five foreign governments.

Why are any deportees sent to a country not their home and why so many? The foundational explanation shows much of this secret stuff is nothing new. U.S. immigration law has long allowed deportation to a country other than a person’s country of citizenship when the home country refuses to issue travel documents, the person previously resided in another country, or removal to the home country is “impractical.” The receiving government must provide “sufficient reliable assurances” that deportees will not be persecuted or tortured or sent to another country where they would be.

As for impracticality, Cuba, China, and Russia accept very few of their own citizens arriving home as deportees, and those countries and others drag their bureaucratic feet on processing the few cases they do accept. Previous administrations were loathe to send these people to a third country and instead allowed them to stay on indefinitely in the U.S. The Trump administration reinterpreted this existing law to more liberally send deportees from America to an interim country from which they can pursue eventual travel to their home country. Some 80 percent do go home, significantly weakening claims that the system is unfair. Australia and Italy use third country deportee systems. So while third country removals are not new, what is relatively new is Trump’s effort to build a standing network of countries willing to receive non-national deportees as a regular part of domestic immigration enforcement.

That leaves just the name, the Office of Remigration. Critics often view the term “remigration” through its European political associations. The term was indeed popularized by activist Martin Sellner and has been adopted by some European nationalist parties, including Alternative for Germany. That the actual office in the State Department, however awkwardly named, just facilitates deportations of foreigners illegally in the United States seems not to matter to those who believe a racist conspiracy to rid the U.S. of “the browns” is afoot.

If the goal is to make America white again, third party deportations are a slow way to do it. Estimates are that this program has deported 15,000 people, some 13,000 of which were pushed back over the border to Mexico (Mexico, of course, has for decades allowed millions of would-be immigrants, any one of whom could have sought asylum in Mexico enroute, to pass freely through its territory enroute to the U.S.). In comparison, depending on how deportations and returns are counted, the Obama administration recorded roughly three million removals and returns. As for those endangered “browns,” they still comprise the majority of legal immigration to America; the top three legal sending countries are Mexico, India, and China.

The real controversy, the media would have you believe, is not simply about an “inhumane” deportation policy. The United States has deported people this way under administrations of both parties for decades. The controversy is largely about word “remigration” in U.S. government usage. Stir in a few accusations of a secret cabal, and an accusation of neo-Nazism, and you end up with another false media-driven Trump crisis.
